As an ICU RN working in the realm of a stereotypical western medicine environment, I am often asked how I found EFT (aka. Tapping). If you are like I was a couple years back, tapping may not even be on your radar; or if you have heard of it, perhaps you think it’s all a little “woo woo” and out there when it comes to treatment options. I see you and I hear you; I was you. I found tapping quite by accident, and am I ever glad I did! Now I am on a mission – to share the “unconventional” along with my own story so that I can bring this underutilised holistic practice to the forefront of the conversation around managing stress & overwhelm, anxiety, depression and so much more.
My name is Danielle. I’m a Registered Nurse of 14 years and I am an Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) practitioner and owner of my own little business Tapping Into Wellness. I am a wife and mom to three busy boys. The pandemic of 2020 and beyond has left me struggling with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Burnout, Compassion Fatigue and Vicarious Trauma. In the midst of a particularly difficult time I discovered Tapping via a podcast, fell in love with its ease of use and accessibility & was able to navigate my way down this road to recovery using it.
I feel that there is so much stigma still around mental health, and reaching out for help, and I wanted to change that by sharing this with others. I wanted to give those around me the same tools and support that I had been given to provide them with a feeling of empowerment and the ability to grow and to live authentically. Tapping became such a valuable tool for myself in so many ways that I knew I had to bring this underutilised practice to the surface. Thus, Tapping into Wellness was born.
Let’s dive in and talk a little bit about what tapping is and how you can easily apply it in your own life.
What is Emotional Freedom Technique?
Emotional Freedom Technique (aka Tapping) is a holistic treatment modality that uses the science of acupressure/acupuncture. As the name would suggest, with tapping, you are quite literally tapping on these points throughout the body.Tapping the points throughout the body clears blockages in the energetic system. These blockages in our energy system are created by negative energy/emotions/traumas. Where positive energy can pass more freely through us, negative energy has a more difficult time passing through and this can create disruptions in our energy system. These disruptions manifest themselves into anxiety, depression, and pain.
Tapping is particularly effective when it comes to managing feelings of stress, overwhelm and anxiety. This is because when you are tapping on the meridian points you are simultaneously sending calming signals right to your amygdala (the part of the brain that controls our body’s response to actual and perceived threatening stimuli). The tapping works to rebalance the energy within us which in turn lowers our cortisol (stress hormone) levels and deactivates our body’s innate fight or flight response system. When you are in an anxious state this action functions to remind your body that you are in fact safe.
Three reasons why you should give tapping a try
- The skill of EFT is dynamic and can be applied to many different facets of your life. For example, using different scripts with the same principles you can tap for gratitude, confidence, stress, and sleep. The possibilities are endless.
- Similarly, since the effects of tapping help unblock energy and reframe our mindset in a variety of situations, it can be used as a complementary tool to help you get more out of things you’re already doing (meditation, journaling, therapy, manifesting, etc.). You could be missing out on a powerful combo!
- EFT only takes a few minutes to learn the basics and most of the time you can feel results happen almost immediately. Plus, learning how to master EFT so you can use it as a daily tool is very accessible with a coach to guide you.
I am grateful that I was able to approach tapping with an open mind. In a way fortunate that my own difficult times lead me to a place where I was willing to try anything. Tapping has been such a game changer for how I handle stress in my everyday life and in my work in the ICU. I hope that in reading this it has opened your own mind to the possibilities that await if you are willing to try something different for yourself. Working in the western medicine trained health care system that we do can often leave us unaware of all the possibilities that exist outside our textbooks.
