Interview with Clare Cooper Marcus

All new episode of Happy Hour! This week, Shannon and Joe speak with Clare Cooper Marcus, Professor Emerita in the Departments of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley. Clare is also the Principal of Healing Landscapes, a consulting firm that specializes in researching the effectiveness of restorative landscapes in healthcare settings, and she is internationally recognized for her pioneering research on the psychological and sociological aspects of architecture, land-use planning, and landscape design – particularly urban open space.

Our conversation with Clare continues our exploration of nature, plants, and gardens as stress relievers, expanding beyond horticultural therapy. From Clare’s expertise, we learn about the design choices behind therapeutic gardens and restorative landscapes. Clare also helps us understand the specific benefits of green spaces and some of the limitations that a restorative landscape architect must consider when planning a therapy garden. If you find Clare’s work as fascinating as we did, check out her most recent book, co-authored with Naomi Sachs, titled Therapeutic Landscapes: An Evidence-Based Approach to Designing Healing Gardens and Restorative Outdoor Spaces.
