Hey Operation Happy Nurse Fam. It’s Shannon McPeek, NICU nurse and founder of this wonderful nonprofit community. As it is Mental Health Awareness Month, I wanted to highlight 5 incredible accounts that support, educate, and help #endthestigma. See below and let us know in the comment section which accounts you’d like to see highlighted.
1. @nedratawwab (she/her)
Nedra Glover Tawwab is a New York Times Bestselling Author, Therapist, and relationship and boundaries expert. As a nurse, we all know that setting boundaries can be EXTREMELY difficult. We constantly get those calls and texts asking us to come in on our off days, impeding our ability to decompress from the job. Nedra’s page not only teaches us how to cultivate healthy relationships, but it helps us navigate our self worth. It encourages us to look at life and relationships through a clear eye.
2. @taydome
Tay Dome is a registered nurse, as well as self care and mental health advocate. Tay is the QUEEN of all things self care. From posting breathing techniques to products that help her mental health, she is sure to help you put YOU first. Her instagram is warm, happy, and welcoming. She also started a webpage called Lemons By Tay to further help you navigate caring for yourself mentally and physically. “When life gives you lemons, what do you do with them?” -Tay Dome, ADN, RN.
3. @haleyjakobson (she/her/hers)
Haley Jakobson is an account we JUST came across, and we are so happy that we did! Haley is a writer and mental health advocate who posts poems, survival guides, and words that will not only make you feel less alone, but help you continue on. Not only is her social media guaranteed to make you feel seen and understood. She also has a mailing list with writings that aren’t posted on her social media, and prompts to help guide you through your inner thoughts.
4. @solomonthomas
Solomon Thomas is an NFL player, and mental health advocate who is truly making a difference in the world. Solomon helped found the organization The Defensive Line whose mission is: “To end the epidemic of youth suicide, especially for young people of color, by transforming the way we communicate and connect about mental health”. In addition to this incredible organization, Solomon will post resources on his personal page and consistently continue the conversation about mental health.
5. @victoriagarrick (she/her)
Victoria is a TED Talk speaker, host of REAL POD, former D1 athlete, and founder of the nonprofit The Hidden Opponent. The nonprofit’s mission is to raise awareness “for student athlete mental health and address the stigma within sports culture”. In addition to this, her personal page helps empower her followers and discuss mental health and body image issues. She speaks so authentically and helps continue the conversation about mental health, therapy, and societal pressures.
